enfinium partners with Cognitive Business to trial best-in-class AI technology to improve plant efficiency

October 9, 2024 | Facility Update, News Releases

Today enfinium, a leading UK energy-from-waste (EfW) operator, is trialling pattern recognition AI technology, supplied by Cognitive Business, at its four operational EfW facilities in the UK (Ferrybridge 1, Ferrybridge 2, Kemsley and Parc Adfer), that will improve plant efficiency, availability and reliability to optimise and maximise uptime.

Cognitive Business, a leader in advanced analytics and artificial intelligence for critical energy infrastructure, will deliver Advanced Pattern Recognition (APR) technology services, drawing on the vast pool of existing operational data to further enhance and optimise plant operations.

Advanced analytics of the dataset will enable enfinium to detect hidden potential operational and maintenance issues earlier and with a higher degree of accuracy, predict and prevent equipment failures, optimise maintenance schedules, and improve overall plant availability and reliability.

Deployed successfully in other power generation sectors – including thermal generation, gas, and wind – this is the first implementation of APR technology at enfinium’s EfW operations.

Chris Bebbington, Group Head of Asset Management at enfinium, said: “Our aim is to pioneer trailblazing technology in the EfW sector, adopting forward-thinking and innovative solutions that enable us to improve the performance of our day-to-day operations. Cognitive Business are industry-leading for advanced analytics and AI, and this partnership aligns with our vision to use AI and big data analytics to manage our facilities more effectively.”

Ty Burridge Oakland, Managing Director at Cognitive Business said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract by enfinium, a business recognised not only as one of the UK’s leading EfW operators but also as an innovator in the use of data, AI and analytics to manage their EfW fleet.

We’re very much looking forward to working with the enfinium team who have a huge amount of experience and competence in operating large conventional assets and are now deploying advanced data-driven technologies in predictive maintenance into the EfW sector.”

About enfinium

enfinium is a leading UK energy from waste operator with four operational sites in the UK, in West Yorkshire, Kent and Flintshire, and two in construction. enfinium diverts 2.3 million tonnes of unrecyclable waste from climate-damaging landfill, putting it to good use by turning it into home grown energy, enough to power 500,000 UK homes. enfinium’s ambition is to transform its facilities into local ‘decarbonisation hubs’ powered by the millions of tonnes of unrecyclable waste the UK will produce for decades to come. Using existing energy from waste infrastructure, enfinium could contribute to heat networks, produce electrolytic hydrogen, or use carbon capture technology to provide durable, high quality carbon removals which will be critical for the UK to achieve net zero by 2050.
