enfinium, a leading UK energy-from-waste operator, today announced that its Skelton Grange facility in Leeds has received its first waste delivery — a key milestone as the project moves toward full operations in 2025.
Around 200 tonnes of unrecyclable waste arrived at the site from six suppliers, marking the latest commissioning milestone in the project’s delivery.
Skelton Grange will be an important site for the development of a circular economy and decarbonisation of unrecyclable waste for West Yorkshire and the wider region. Once operational, it will divert up to 410,000 tonnes of unrecyclable waste from emissions-intensive landfill every year and generate up to 49MW of homegrown energy enough to power over 100,000 UK homes.
Energy from waste sites across the UK help to reduce overall emissions from the UK’s waste by diverting waste that cannot be recycled from landfill, which generates nearly twice the amount of harmful climate-warming emissions.1
The construction of the site has provided a boost the local economy with an investment of over £500m in its development. Over 400 jobs have been created during the construction phase and, once operational, the facility will provide over 40 high-quality full-time roles.
In February 2025, it was announced that the Aire Valley Heat and Power Network, an innovative low carbon heating and electricity scheme in Leeds, was awarded £19.5 million in funding from the Government’s Green Heat Network Fund. The scheme will harness waste heat from enfinium’s Skelton Grange facility to offer reliable, sustainable heating.
