enfinium launches consultation on proposal to build carbon capture technology at Ferrybridge

November 4, 2026 | News Releases
  • Local people invited to have their say on proposals to install carbon capture and storage technology at enfinium’s Ferrybridge 1 and 2 facilities
  • Project expected to capture at least 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and support several hundred jobs during the busiest periods of construction
  • Consultation runs from Wednesday 4 November to Wednesday 9 December, with a webinar and community consultation event in Ferrybridge

WEST YORKSHIRE – enfinium, one of the UK’s leading energy from waste operators, has launched a public consultation on plans to install carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology at its Ferrybridge 1 and 2 facilities in Knottingley, West Yorkshire.

The consultation opens on Wednesday 4 November and runs until Wednesday 9 December 2026, giving residents, community groups and other interested parties the opportunity to learn more about the proposals and share their views. It follows an initial consultation held in 2024 and gives people a further opportunity to review, influence and comment on the project as the plans are developed.

The Ferrybridge carbon capture project would add CCS technology to enfinium’s existing Ferrybridge 1 and 2 energy-from-waste facilities. Together, the facilities form one of the UK’s largest combined energy-from-waste operations, processing 1.45 million tonnes of residual waste each year and generating 170MW of power.

Once operational, the project could capture at least 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Carbon capture technology would remove CO₂ from the flue gases produced by the energy-from-waste facilities so that it can be contained and transported for permanent storage.

Around half of the CO₂ produced at Ferrybridge comes from biogenic materials in waste, such as food, paper and other organic matter. Because these materials absorbed CO₂ from the atmosphere as they grew, capturing and permanently storing this biogenic CO₂ would not only avoid emissions but remove CO₂ from the atmosphere, creating the potential to generate carbon-negative power. The project would make a significant contribution to the UK’s net zero ambitions and to the decarbonisation of the waste and energy sectors.

Construction is expected to take a minimum of three-and-a-half years, supporting several hundred jobs during the busiest periods. Once operational, the project would create around 45 additional permanent jobs, supporting long-term skilled jobs, investment and a lower-carbon economy in the north.

Mike Maudsley, Chief Executive Officer at enfinium, said: “To achieve net zero, the UK needs practical solutions that can deliver carbon removals at scale while continuing to manage the unrecyclable waste our society produces. Carbon capture at Ferrybridge represents an important opportunity to do both.

“Our proposals could allow us to capture at least 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, while supporting several hundred jobs during construction and could create around 45 additional permanent roles once operational.

“I’d encourage people to take a look at the information we have published, come along to one of our consultation events, ask us questions and tell us what they think.”

Have your say

People can find information about the proposals, consultation documents and the online feedback form at www.enfiniumferrybridge.co.uk.

A webinar will take place via Zoom on Monday 16 November, from 6pm to 7pm. People can register through the project website.

An in-person community consultation event will be held on Saturday 21 November, from 9am to 1pm, at Ferrybridge Community Centre, The Square, Ferrybridge, Knottingley, WF11 8PQ. It’s a drop in event, so visitors can arrive at any point to find out about the proposals and ask questions of the project team.

Feedback can be submitted:

  • by email to decarbonisation@enfiniumferrybridge.co.uk
  • by post to FREEPOST ENFINIUM DECARBONISATION, with no stamp required

About enfinium

enfinium is a leading UK energy from waste operator with five operational sites in the UK, in West Yorkshire, Kent and Flintshire, and one in construction. enfinium diverts 2.7 million tonnes of unrecyclable waste from climate-damaging landfill, putting it to good use by turning it into home grown energy, enough to power 600,000 UK homes. enfinium’s ambition is to transform its facilities into local ‘decarbonisation hubs’ powered by the millions of tonnes of unrecyclable waste the UK will produce for decades to come. Using existing energy from waste infrastructure, enfinium could contribute to heat networks, produce electrolytic hydrogen, or use carbon capture technology to provide durable, high quality carbon removals which will be critical for the UK to achieve net zero by 2050.
